Smith's Civil War Carbine, by A&M Machine Works, #6430, .50 cal., 21-5/8'' half-round half-octagon barrel, blue and case hardened finish, straight walnut stock and forend, steel buttplate, blade front sight and folding rear sight. Left side of breech with ''A&M Machine Works'' markings which are partially visible; the following marks remain clear: ''ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / SMITH'S PATENT / JUNE 23, 1857''. Lower trigger tang marked with ''W''. Serial numbers on lower breech and near hinge on forward portion of the gun are matching. Left side of stock at wrist with clear cartouche. Condition is fine. Barrel retains approx. 70% thinning and toning blue. Breech with scattered dark spotting and trace amounts of case coloring to right side in protected areas. Stock with one fine fissure to left side at wrist, as well as oil darkening and other normal signs of age and wear; there is one small loss at the toe. Action remains tight, bore is very good with a few patches of moderate corrosion. Est.: $1,200-$1,800. (Antique)
