South Dakota Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep
Although rocky mountain bighorn sheep are not native to South Dakota the population of bighorns is approximately 500 in 5 geographic regions in western South Dakota. The Audubon bighorn was native to South Dakota, but the last remaining sheep was harvested in 1925.
This ram lived his life in the Spring Creek area of the Black Hill and was a subject of the study of mountain lion predation in bighorns in 2013-2014. This ram was killed by a lion on March 30th, 2013, and biologist became aware by a mortality signal from the radio collar he was wearing. On April 4th biologists located and necropsied the animal and the skull has been in storage since then.
South Dakota donated this ram for the Greater Dacotah Chapter to auction with the proceeds going to bighorn sheep research and management in South Dakota! This ram has a Boone and Crockett score of 153 inches and was 6 years old at the time of death!
This is your opportunity to gain a part of South Dakota wildlife history and add this great ram to your collection.
