Southern full stocked percussion rifle circa 1850-1860’s stamped, “J.S.” in large letters on the barrel attributed to J. Sutherland, Richmond, Virginia. The rifle is formerly part of the Fred Slayton Confederate Armscollection. The rifle measures approximately 52 ½” in overall length with a 37” medium weight rifled octagon barrel of approximately .50-.52 caliber. The rifle has a simple incised border carving extending around thecheek piece to the center of the wrist and at the fore end. The rifle is in good, as found and uncleaned condition with a dark brown patina on the metal. There is scattered light to moderate pitting anderosion with slightly heavier pitting at the firing area around the nipple. The stock is in very good condition with the majority of its dark stained finish showing wear through to lighter color wood beneath. Deepuncleaned patina on brass mounts. The stock shows wear and carry but is at very good overall. The triggers set and the action works well. The ramrod is an old, carved homemade example from the period of use.
