Antique .58 caliber muzzle loading percussion 3 band rifled musket. Standard infantry rifle of Union forces of the U.S. Civil war. Lock plate dated 1864. Features a 40" round barrel, blade front sight, "L" shaped flip-up rear sight, missing ramrod, smooth trigger, knurled hammer spur, iron furniture, sling swivels and full-length straight grip walnut stock with metal carbine buttplate. Markings include: Lock - "1864”, American Eagle/”U.S. /SPRINGFIELD” Barrel - ”V/P/[Eagle Head]” Buttplate - "U.S." Bolster- American Eagle, the right barrel bands are marked "U". The stock flat above the buttplate is stamped "39". (Armory rack number) The rifle is in "barn/attic found" condition with the metal surfaces turned a brown patina, the markings are clear and the two-cock hammer action is crisp. Bore is fair, light brown color and visible rifling and the wood stocks are overall good/sound with the usual dings/scratches with a chip out of the left forearm between the top two barrel bands. Comes with the original socket bayonet with a locking ring, marked "U.S. on the ricasso with metal tipped scabbard. Scabbard is poor, worn, torn,incomplete with open seam, appears to have been with the rifle a long time with corresponding ring wear on the muzzle.
Condition is NRA Good to Very Good. Antique Firearm.
