Antique Springfield Model 1868 Allin Trapdoor Infantry Rifle, with bayonet and sling, #6043, .50 CF cal., 32.5'' round barrel with block-blade front sight (doubles as bayonet lug) and long-range sliding-leaf rear sight, marked ''6043'' at breech; trapdoor breech has matching ser. no., marked ''1869/(eagle head)/U.S.'' at hinge; beveled lockplate is stamped ''(spread-wing eagle and shield)'' to left of ''U.S./Springfield'' below latch lever, and ''1865'' to rear; iron furniture includes two-piece trigger guard marked ''P'' over ''43'' on long rear tang, curved buttplate marked ''US'' at top tang, two spring-retained barrel bands, nosecap, and slotted flat-tip ramrod; walnut fullstock has script ''SWP'' (Samuel W. Porter) inspector's cartouche at left opposite lock. Mfg'd ca. 1868-72, in overall ''arsenal bright'' finished metal and oil-stained stock. Condition is very good. Barrel retains much of its bright finish, the balance of the metal is smooth gunmetal gray with sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound and smooth with light use marks, minor loss around sideplate, nice grain and color. Action is crisp; bore is bright with defined rifling. Bayonet is gunmetal gray and marked ''US/S'' at throat; russet leather sling is sound with light aging. Est.: $700-$1,000. (Antique)
