American made single-shot military rifle chambered for .50-70 Government. The Model 1868 features a receiver length of 2-1/8", and a shorter arched underside of breech bolt of 1-7/8". Rifle has matching numbers on the barrel and receiver, as well as an "1869" dated breech bolt over an eagle head and "U.S." marking. Rifle features a blued finish, a 32-1/2" round barrel, blade front sight, adjustable folding elevator rear sight, smooth curved trigger, civil war style lock plate, no cleaning rod, sling swivels on the front barrel band and trigger guard, and no provision for a stacking swivel. Proper lock plate with "1863" dated on the side. Rear sight base is butted against the receiver. The oil finished walnut furniture consists of a smooth straight gripped shoulder stock, smooth forend, two barrel bands, and a smooth metal butt plate. There are a couple of feint cartouches on the left side of the stock above the trigger. The original blued finish retained is approximately 15% with most of the metal taking on a brown patina. Metal displays a few dings, and some light pin-prick pitting. The walnut furniture is in good condition considering its age, with handling marks, dings, and some chipping at the rear of the shoulder stock. Action is smooth and crisp, and the bore shows strong rifling with light oxidative peppering. The engravings are sharp, and legible.
Condition is NRA Good.
