U.S. Springfield Model 1868 Trapdoor Single Shot Cartridge Infantry Rifle, #38157, .50 RF cal., 32.5'' round barrel, ''1870/eaglehead/crossed arrows/US'' on trapdoor below hinge, spread-eagle on lockplate near ''U.S./Springfield, 1863'' stamped behind hammer, ''US'' on buttplate tang. Metal originally finished bright, with oil-finished one-piece walnut stock. (See page 8 of the book, ''The .45-70 Springfield'', by Poyer and Riesch.) Condition is fine to excellent with smooth, lightly patinated metal and excellent markings. Stock with two inspector's cartouches opposite lockplate, is nicely colored, smooth and solid, and shows nicely. Action is tight and crisp, bore is bright. Est.: $1,200-$1,800.
