Rifle. Single-Shot. Hinged breech block action. Produced 1870-1872. This one manufactured in 1870, first year of production. Indian Wars period rifle. Some parts such as lock plate are from production for Springfield Model 1863 rifled musket. 32.6" barrel. 2nd variation, 1870-71. "4314" stamped on barrel. No visible number on receiver. Lock plate stamped "U.S. / Springfield / (Eagle) / 1864". U.S. marked buttplate, Unit stamped "D 3". Breech block stamped "1870 / (eagles head) / (crossed arrows) / US". Bore is good/ shiny rifling is present. Hammer and breech block lock up tight. Metal has turned a plum/gray patina with scattered areas of rust/pitting. Wood is sound with a couple of minor chips along the forearm where it meets the barrel, Readable inspectors cartouche is visible on the left stock. Cleaning rod missing. Front sling swivel is missing. A rare rifle. NRA Condition-Good as Antique Firearm
