Antique U.S. military single shot rolling block rifle chambered in .50-70 Government, manufactured by Springfield Armory circa 1871-1872 under a royalty agreement with Remington. Approximately 10,000 of the Model 1871 were produced. Features a 36” barrel, blade front sight, adjustable flip-up ladder rear sight, two barrel bands, cleaning rod, sling swivels, smooth trigger, checkered hammer spur, near full-length walnut forend and straight grip shoulder stock with metal buttplate. Markings: Receiver - “518”, “MODEL 1871”, “[Eagle]/U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1872” & “REMINGTONS PATENT/PAT. MAY 3D NOV 15TH 1864 APRIL 17TH 1868”. Buttplate - “US”. & Stock - “ESA'' cartouche for Erskine S. Allin & “S”. Rifle is predominately in-the-white with the formerly case hardened receiver showing mottled light & dark grey tones. Action is mechanically sound, the three land bore is bright showing strong rifling with scattered pitting, the markings are very good and the walnut stocks are fair with blemishes & major damage to the forend.
