Sn: 218831. Identified US military single shot rifle. Issued to Pvt. Edward Bowen of Co. H, 1st South Carolina Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish American War. Manufactured between April and June 1883. Features 32.5" barrel, 1878 "Buckhorn" rear sight stamped "R", sling swivels, stacking swivel, Correct third variation M1873 cleaning rod, straight gripped walnut stock, curved steel buttplate. "P" proof cartouche visible, "SWP 1882" cartouche on left wrist (samuel W. Porter), correct as Springfield marked the stocks in advance. Breech block is stamped "Model 1873". Barrel marked over chamber "V / P / (eagle head)", "P". Buttplate marked "US" on the tang. The U.S./Eagle markings on the lock plate are clear, Serial number is crisp/clear. Comes with documents from the Springfield Research Service signed by Charles W. Pate detailed the history of the rifle with the 1st SC Volunteer Inf. along with Pvt. Bowen's service records and a history of the regiment. Period M1887 leather sling with one brass claw attached. The 3-cock hammer action is crisp, trapdoor locks-up tight, the bore is excellent/bright with strong rifling, the wood is very good/sound with minor dings & dents and the original blue is about 50% with the rest turning a brown patina.
