Antique U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Breechloading Military Cadet Rifle, with 1877 Improvements, #439553, .45-70 Gov't. CF cal, 29.5'' round barrel is marked ''V/P/(eagle head)/P'' and ''A'' at breech, has block-blade front (doubles as socket bayonet lug) and adjustable sliding-leaf rear (correctly marked ''R'' for Rifle) sights; trapdoor is marked ''U.S./Model/1873'' at hinge; flat lockplate is marked (spread-wing eagle) left of ''U.S./Springfield'' ahead of hammer; standard iron furniture including two-piece triggerguard, two spring-retained barrel bands (top with stacking swivel, lower with sling swivel), curved buttplate marked ''U.S.'' at top screw, nosecap and button-tip steel ramrod. Oil-stained walnut fullstock with ''ESA (Master Armorer Erskine S. Allin)/1893'' cartouche opposite the lock (faint but legible). Additional 1873 features include flush fit barrel-receiver juncture, and short stock comb; 1877 features include ''low-arch'' breechblock and rear sight with curved base. Condition is very good+. Barrel retains traces of blue in protected areas, and a smooth brownish patina; triggerguard has 50% blue, balance of the metal is smooth gunmetal gray. Stock is sound with light age/use marks and nice reddish color. Action is stout; bore is brilliant with sharp rifling. Rare, as only 1,050 cadet rifles of this 1877 version were made.
