US military hinged breech block single shot cadet rifle chambered in .45-70 caliber and manufactured in 1892. Features a 20.5" barrel, serrated trigger and Buffington rear sight which is marked with the letter "R". The breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1884" and the lock plate is marked with the eagle/shield motif along with "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. The left rear side of the barrel is stamped with "V/P/eaglehead/P" proofs. The letter "A" is stamped on the top of the barrel at the breech. The oiled finished stock has a "SWP/1892" cartouche on the left side of the wrist. The stock has two barrel bands. A sling swivel is attached to the trigger guard and a sling swivel and stacking swivel are attached to the front barrel band. The rifle has a button head cleaning rod that's too long probably belonging to standard rifle version. Blued and case hardened finish has turned into a brown/yellow patina with light pitting and surface rust around breech and lock. Bore is pitted but has good rifling, one piece wood stock has gouges but is in good shape, action functions well. Also included is a modern cap & ball 36" blued barrel with adjustable rear sight in good condition. Overall condition of rifle is good. ***Antique Firearm***
