U.S. Springfield Model 1888 ''Ramrod Bayonet'' Trapdoor Infantry Rifle, #558943, .45-70 Gov't. cal., 32-5/8'' barrel with block-blade front sight and Buffington rear sight (correctly marked ''R'' for Rifle) marked ''V/P/(eaglehead)/P'' and ''A'' at breech; trapdoor breechblock is marked ''US/Model/1884'' in three lines at hinge; flush-mounted lockplate has a spread-wing eagle clutching olive branches ahead of hammer (other markings obscured); correct one-piece triggerguard with sling swivel at front; steel furniture including two spring-retained barrel bands (top band with stacking swivel), buttplate with sliding door opening to trap for cleaning rod (not present) is marked ''US'' behind tang screw; one-piece ramrod bayonet. Oil-stained walnut fullstock with ''SWP/1892'' (Samuel W. Porter) inspector's cartouche on left side. Mfg'd ca. 1889-93. Condition is all original and very good, the steel parts generally a smooth gunmetal gray-brown, the lockplate with pitting at rear and partially obscured markings. Stock shows the expected marks of military use and age and losses at top band on right side and along the ramrod channel, otherwise solid. Action is strong and smooth; bore is shiny with distinct rifling. Est.: $750-$1,250. (Antique)
