SN: 553726. A U.S. Model 1888 Trapdoor Springfield rifle issued to the 9th New York Infantry Regiment during the Spanish-American War. Serial no. 553726, was issued to Company E of the 9th New York Volunteer Infantry. The 9th was mustered into service in May 1898 to fight in the Spanish-American War. Manufactured 1892. .45-70 caliber. 32 5/8 inch barrel with standard proofs and Buffington rear sight, ramrod bayonet and marked on left side ahead of breech with a small Maltese cross. Breechblock and lockplate with standard markings. Walnut stock with 1892 dated cartouche, script "P" firing proof, unit/rack marking 9 E 26. on comb and a nice clear "SWP 1892" (Samuel W. Porter) cartouche on the left wrist. Period M1887 leather sling with one brass claw attached. Comes with a Springfield Research Service letter confirming the rifle was issued to Co. E, 9th NY Volunteer Infantry in 1998 along with the history of the Regt. and the Maltese Cross. Also included is a M1881 dress helmet with brass NY 9th "Excelsior" Infantry shield, brass spike, Infantry side buttons, maker marked Ridabock & Co. Fair condition with moth damage. The bore is very good/bright, the 3-cock hammer action is crisp, the trapdoor locks-up tight, the finish has mostly a brown patina and the wood is very good with the usual minor dings & dents. All markings are clear, readable.
