This is a original U.S. Springfield model 1899 "Krag' carbine that has been sporterized by replacing the the original stock/handguard with a Fajen stock and the front sight blade. Original 22' barrel, correct M1901 2300 yard carbine sight, The base, ladder, and slide are stamped with a small "C", the original pinned, front blade sight has been replaced with a higher blade with a rear rounded edge. Besides these two alterations,it has all the original parts, side-loading magazine, trigger, triggerguard, bolt, flag safety, side plate, magazine cut-off. The Springfield markings on the left receiver are intact & clear. Serial number 283374 was manufactured in 1900. According to official Springfield Armory Production Records, serial numbers ranging from 219,926 to 290,578 fall into the 1900 fiscal year production block. Given how close 283,374 is to the end of that block, its receiver was likely milled and stamped around May or June of 1900. The action is sound, the bore is bright with good rifling, light frosting in the grooves, the original blue is about 25%, mostly on the lower barrel where it was protected by the handguard, the rest has turn a gray patina from age & wear. The Fajen one-piece stock has a flat target style forearm, high comb, shadow-line cheek rest and black plastic grip cap & Fajen buttplate.
