U.S. Springfield Model 1866 Allin Trapdoor Single Shot Cartridge Infantry Rifle, NVSN, .50 CF cal., 36-5/8'' round barrel, tiny ''1866'' over small eagle head on trapdoor, spread-eagle on lockplate near ''U.S./Springfield'', ''1864'' stamped behind hammer, ''US'' on buttplate tang. Arsenal altered from the Model 1863 percussion musket. Metal originally finished bright, oil finished one-piece walnut stock with deep, clear ''ESA'' (Erskine S. Allin) cartouche opposite lock. (Ref. page 8 of the book, ''The .45-70 Springfield'', by Poyer and Riesch.) Condition is excellent with smooth bright metal and clear markings.
