U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Indian Wars Period Trapdoor Single Shot Cartridge Infantry Rifle, #280681, .45-70 CF cal., 32-5/8'' round barrel having small block-blade front sight (for mounting socket bayonet) and long-range, adjustable sliding-leaf rear sight, ''low arch'' breechblock, all steel furniture including two barrel bands and retaining springs, stacking/sling swivels, flat lockplate and hammer, grooved trigger, triggerguard and buttplate, nosecap, and ramrod with small button tip and short cleaning patch slot. Barrel marked ''V/P/(eagle head)/P'' at breech, breechblock marked ''U.S./Model/1873'', ''M/11'' marked ahead of hinge, ''(spread-wing eagle) and U.S./Springfield/1873'' on flat lockplate, ''U.S.'' on buttplate tang. Originally finished in blue with case hardened breechblock and barrel tang. Oil-finished one-piece walnut fullstock. Condition is very good, retaining most original darkening blue to barrel with light peppering to top surfaces on either side of rear sight, most blue to triggerguard, faint markings to lockplate (perhaps refinished long ago), 50% blue with rusting and finish losses to buttplate, and nicely mottled case colors to breechblock and barrel tang. Stock is sound showing age and the expected signs of military use, pleasing color, and without cracks or losses; no inspector's cartouche is evident opposite the lock. Action is tight and crisp, bore is clean and shiny with distinct rifling. Est.: $950-$1,250. (Antique)
