SN: 5438959. True U.S. Navy Mk2 Mod 1 Conversion. Grade B (Fitted with standard non-hooded adjustable rear sight apertures). Grade B was to serve as an accurized competition and service rifle. It was issued as a trophy or match rifle for marksmanship competitions. The U.S. Navy replaced .30-06 barrels with newly manufactured 7.62mm NATO barrels in 1965 and 1966. Serial number on receiver dates to 1954-55. Mk2 Mod1 features a dedicated, true 7.62 NATO chamber (unlike the problematic Mk2 Mod0 which used a chamber insert bushing). The SA barrel is dated "8 65" , DOD stamp, and large "7.62 MM". Glass-bedded stock, "NM" Op rod, front sight marked "NM 062", the right stock above the trigger has a small decal reading "1978 National Championships" Rifle was owned by Scott Riles, a prominent high-power rifle competitive shooter, precision equipment designer, and a highly ranked High Master marksman from Thousand Oaks, California. At the western Creedmoor Cup Matches, Riles secured 1st place in the Any/Iron Sights category, shooting a near-perfect score of 200-12X. Riles earned the National Rifle Association's (NRA) highest classification tier, High Master, reflecting an exceptionally high average percentage over aggregate long-range and highpower events. He is also widely recognized across the national shooting community for his contributions to precision engineering. He designed and manufactured custom highpower rifle parts, most notably the Riles Front Sight (such as the popular Riles "Highboy" front sight). Features a parkerized finish, chromed at the gas block, rear sight marked "BME" (Bruce Machine & Engineering Co.) Sa marked safety, trigger housing and hammer. Bolt and trigger group electro-penciled with matching serial number numbers (Common, arsenal or armory markings used to track and re-associate fitted parts during maintenance/ rebuilds. The plastic magazine block is missing, spacers were made of a relatively brittle resin clipped directly onto the steel bullet guide. Over time became brittle, crack, and eventually shatter or fall out. The block was nicknamed the "idiot block". Its only purpose was to physically block a shooter from accidentally inserting a longer clip of .30-06. Because the rifle functions perfectly fine without it, armorers and civilian owners rarely bothered to replace it. The bore is excellent/bright, action is smooth, the finish is about 97% with light handling wear and some friction wear on the bolt and the wood is overall excellent with very minor scratches, has "P" proof on the grip, DOPE label on right side of stock, high gloss finish.
