Springfield Model 1873/1877 Trapdoor Infantry Rifle, with bayonet, scabbard and frog, #458567, .45-70 Gov't. CF cal., 32-5/8'' round barrel with block-blade front sight (doubles as bayonet lug) and Buffington rear sight (stamped ''R'' for Rifle), marked ''V/P/(eagle head)/P'' and ''A'' at breech; trapdoor is marked ''US/Model/1873'' at hinge; flat lockplate is marked ''(spread-wing eagle)'' and ''US/Springfield'' ahead of hammer; steel furniture includes two-piece trigger guard with sling swivel at front, curved buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw, two spring-retained bands (top with stacking swivel), nosecap, and slotted button-tip ramrod; oil-stained walnut fullstock. This is the transitional Model 1877 rifle having a longer stock comb, low-arch breechblock, and no ''1873'' lockplate date. Condition is very good, the metal surfaces retaining approx. 85% original military-style blue (with light aging to barrel and highpoint losses to buttplate), dark color to case hardened lock, and smooth wood having pleasing grain and color (likely having been sanded and stained, as it is lacking inspector's markings); rear sight is a later addition. Action is crisp and smooth; bore shines with scattered erosion and deep rifling. Bayonet retains 85% original blue with occasional discoloration and is marked ''U.S.'' over ''E'' at throat, scabbard is mostly gunmetal gray, black leather frog is sound showing light age and has a large brass ''US'' rosette. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)
