Indian Wars Era U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Carbine, #134206, .45-70 Gov't CF cal., 22'' barrel with integral block-blade front sight and sliding-leaf rear sight (correctly marked ''C'' for Carbine), is marked ''V/P/(eagle head)/P'' at left breech; trapdoor breechblock marked ''U.S./Model/1873'' at hinge; flat lockplate with spread-wing eagle clutching olive branches to left of ''U.S./Springfield'' ahead of hammer; steel furniture including a single spring-retained barrel band, two-piece triggerguard (without sling swivel), and curved buttplate marked ''U.S.'' at top screw; oil-stained walnut halfstock. This rather enigmatic arm appears to have correct Model 1873 carbine features: the straight juncture of receiver (with squared edges) and barrel, the pin-fastened front sight blade, the 3-click tumbler, stock with short comb and without trap in butt for a jointed cleaning rod. However, it also has the later ''Low Arch'' breechblock, a corrugated trigger, lacks the ''1873'' date on lockplate, lacks the left-side sling bar and ring, and has an incorrect Model 1890 barrel band with raised sight protector and no stacking swivel. Condition is very good. Barrel, triggerguard, hammer and buttplate show a smooth blue-brown patina, trapdoor with mottled case colors, lockplate with a dark blue tone. Stock is sound showing the typical marks and dings of military use; it was perhaps smoothed over at one time, as no inspector marks are visible. Action is strong and smooth; bore shows black powder erosion in top half, but is otherwise clean with sharp rifling. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)
