Antique U.S. Model 1873 Springfield Trapdoor Infantry Rifle, with 1877 improvements, #117460, .45-70 cal., 32-5/8'' round barrel with block-blade front (doubles as bayonet lug) and later Buffington ''R'' (rifle) rear sights marked ''V/P/(eaglehead)/P'' and ''A'' at breech, M1877 low-arch breechblock marked ''US/Model/1873'' at hinge, flat lockplate has spread-wing eagle and ''U.S./Springfield'' below latch, steel fittings include two spring-retained barrel bands (stacking swivel at top), two-piece trigger guard (sling swivel at front), curved buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw, nosecap, slotted button-tip ramrod; one-piece oil-finished walnut fullstock with longer M1877 comb. Condition is very good, original and complete, the barrel with hints of blue in protected places, balance of the metal having no original finish but an overall dark aged patina. Stock is sound (likely sanded) with minor marks, no inspector's cartouche, and a later coat of varnish. Action is strong and smooth; bore needs cleaning, with scattered erosion and good rifling.
