U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Single Shot Trapdoor Carbine, with Model 1879 improvements, #177066*, .45-70 CF cal., 22'' round rifled barrel marked ''V/P/(eagle head)'' at breech with hooded blade front sight and correct C-marked (for ''Carbine'') adjustable leaf rear sight; trapdoor marked ''U.S./Model/1873'' at hinge; flat lockplate marked ''(spread-wing eagle)'' left of U.S./Springfield/1873''; buttplate with sliding door opening to trap for three-piece cleaning rod (missing) and marked ''US'' on tang; oil-finished walnut halfstock with rectangular ''SWP/1887'' inspector's cartouche to left side behind iron sling bar and ring. Originally blued and case hardened finish. Condition is good to very good showing a lightly etched dark brown patina to barrel, case hardening on underside of trapdoor and in chamber, and an overall brown to balance of metal. Stock is sound with the normal marks of military use. Action is smooth; bore is shiny with very good rifling. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)(Joe Poyer collection)
