U.S. Springfield Model 1877 Trapdoor Cartridge Carbine, #175965*, .45-70 centerfire cal., 22'' round steel barrel marked ''V/P/(eaglehead)/P'' at breech; ''U.S./Model/1873'' at trapdoor hinge; ''US'' on steel buttplate. Straight oil-finished walnut stock with ''SWP/1878'' inspector's cartouche at left wrist; iron sling bar and ring mounted opposite lock. Sliding door in butt reveals trap for three-piece cleaning rod. Condition is fine retaining most blue on back half of barrel (barrel may be from a later gun); trapdoor appears to have been blued. Clean and straight screw slots. Stock is smooth and solid having nice color, apparently having been tack decorated at one time. (Some of the holes are filled with what appears to be glue.) Crisp and tight action, bore is shiny with sharp rifling. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (Antique)(Joe Poyer collection)
