Antique U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Infantry Rifle, altered to a Sporting Rifle, #483761, .45-70 Gov't. CF cal., 32-3/8'' round barrel with standard rifle sights, marked ''V/P/(eagle head)/P'' and ''A'' at breech; trapdoor breechblock is marked ''U.S./Model/1884'' at hinge; flat lockplate is marked ''(spread-wing eagle with shield)'' and ''U.S./Springfield''; steel mountings include one spring-retained barrel band, two-piece trigger guard with sling swivel at front, curved buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw; one-piece oil-stained walnut halfstock. Mfg'd ca. 1886-91. Condition is good to very good as altered, retaining no original metal finishes but an overall gunmetal gray color with scattered discoloration. Stock is solid with scattered age-use marks, was shortened and tapered 3.5'' ahead of barrel band. Action is crisp; bore is clean with scattered etching and sharp rifling. Est.: $350-$500. (Antique)
