Springfield Model 1903 National Match Bolt Action Rifle, #1272012, .30-06 cal., 24'' barrel, parkerized finish/bright bolt, walnut stock, blade front sight and folding leaf with aperture National Match rear sight. Marked on receiver ring ''U.S. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY MODEL 1903'', and on barrel behind the front sight ''SA/(flaming bomb)/12-25''. ''J5'' stamped on top of bolt handle. A presentation plaque has been professionally affixed to right side of buttstock that reads: ''HENRY W.WHITNEY CO I SEVENTH REGIMENT''. Rifle has the following features consistent with a ''Style B'' Nation Match(NM) rifle of the period: Serial number range is in the 1926 fiscal year (12-25 barrel date), bright bolt has serial number (72012) engraved across bolt body, barrel is ''star gauged'' at muzzle crown in the 6 o'clock position, the bright polished National Match rear sight leaf lacks the ''U'' notch on top bar for the 2850-yd. range, as NM rifles were shot to a maximum of 1000 yards; right rear of receiver has been arsenal drilled and tapped for Lyman 48C receiver sight (but no evidence of a rifle sight ever being installed), safety lever has been reversed and a headless cocking piece has been fitted to speed up lock time. Handguard has convex-shaped hump behind lower band. Style ''B'' stock has a full-length forend and flattened pistol grip; there is no cartouche on the left side as it was not made for military use but does have a ''P'' firing proof on the underside of the wrist; a checkered National Match buttplate is fitted. Condition overall is fine with over 93%-95% of the dark green finish remaining on metal surfaces. Bright bolt shows wear across the center and the handle has darkened. Wood has a dark even color, with the exception of the area around the plaque which is a lighter shade. Action is smooth, bright bore is excellent with sharp rifling. Overall, an exceptional example of a rare rifle. Est.: $3,000-$4,000. (C&R)
