Springfield Armory-Sharps Model 1870 Second Type Cartridge Infantry Rifle, #218, .50-70 CF cal., 35.5'' round barrel, ''U.S.'' marked on buttplate tang (markings other than serial number and U.S. are obscured due to heavy pitting), originally ''bright'' and case hardened finish, one-piece walnut stock with oval inspector stamp on left wrist, two iron barrel bands, and iron ramrod. Mfg'd circa 1870, with total production limited to approx. 1,300 guns. Condition is fair to good showing an overall dark aged patina to steel parts, heavily pitted in places. Stock is straight and solid showing nicks and gouges, with two original sling swivels. A complete and untouched example of a quite scarce variation U.S. rifle that was fabricated as an entirely new model, and not merely an arsenal conversion. Action is crisp, dark bore. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (Antique)(Joe Poyer collection)
