Antique U.S. Springfield Transitional Model 1873/1877 ''Trapdoor'' Breechloading Saddle Ring Carbine, #6672, .45-70 Gov't. CF cal., 22'' round barrel with block-blade front and stepped sliding-leaf rear sights, marked ''V/P/(eagle head)/PP'' at breech; trapdoor breechblock is marked ''Model/1873/(eagle head)/(crossed arrows)/US'' at hinge; flat lockplate is marked ''(spread-eagle)'' to left of ''U.S./Springfield'' at front; steel furniture includes left side sling bar and ring, carbine buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw with door pivoting open to butt trap for a three-piece cleaning rod (rod is present), two-piece trigger guard, and single spring-retained barrel band with stacking swivel; oil-stained walnut halfstock. This carbine retains the 1873-style lockplate markings (without the date), high-arch breechblock with earliest markings, and flush barrel-receiver juncture, but adds the transitional ''Model 1877'' changes including the stepped-base rear sight, a longer stock comb and buttstock trap for cleaning rod. Condition is fine. Barrel shows a smooth blue-brown patina; breech, trapdoor, lockplate and hammer are a smooth dark color; trigger guard retains 60% blue; edges and markings are sharp and clear. Stock is sound with minor marks, lovely grain and color, and perhaps a later coat of finish as no inspector's mark is present. Action is strong and smooth; bore is mostly shiny with defined rifling. Fewer than 3,000 of these 1873-77 carbines were made, making them quite scarce and desirable today. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (Antique)
