"bnz 45", an Austrian made military issued bolt-action centerfire infantry rifle chambered for 8mm Mauser, and manufactured circa 1945. This late war (WWII) K98k rifle was manufactured by Steyr-Daimler-Puch (Steyr), and these late models were known as Kriegsmodells. These were last ditch attempt rifles with stamped parts, rough unfinished stocks, and some even had no butt plate. Some of these rifle were phosphate finished instead of being blued. Rifle features a matte phosphate finish, receiver cut for stripper clip guide, a 24" barrel, inverted 'V' front sight, tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters, turned down bolt handle, round vent holes in the bolt, manual three position flag type manual safety on the rear of the bolt, bolt release mounted on the left receiver rail, stamped and welded barrel band, no cleaning rod, no bayonet lug, stamped floorplate, smooth curved trigger, and stamped trigger guard. The hardwood furniture consists of a smooth semi-pistol gripped shoulder stock, smooth forend, smooth forend, sling loop on the rear barrel band (stamped and welded band), sling slot cut into the shoulder stock, and a cupped metal butt plate. Serial numbers are mismatched to the receiver on all of the parts. These rifles were produced hastily at the end of the war, and often times they left the factory with mismatched parts. This explains why the stock lacks waffenamts. An Eagle/swastika proof mark is marked on left side of the barrel with serial number. "bnz 45" and "Mod. 98" are marked on the receiver ring, 'byf' is stamped on floorplate, and 'SVW' is marked trigger guard. The original phosphate finish retained is approximately 80% with handling blemishes, and a general thinning to a mottled gray patina. The barrel appears to have had another black finish applied to it, and there is little of that finish remaining. Metal displays slight screw slot deformation, and there are a few small spots of oxidation on several of the rifles components. Action is smooth and crisp, and the bore is bright with strong rifling. The furniture wood is in good condition with many small handling marks, and no cracks.
Condition is NRA Fair to Good.
