Cal. 22 RF. S# 1351. Bbl. 3 1/2" oct. w/ rib having mfg. name & New Haven, CT address. Estimated quantity of 2100 mfg. in the early 1860's by carbine maker J. H. Merrill. Brass semi circular front sight. Spur trigger action w/ bbl. release at top, bbl. pivots downward for loading. Bbl. flats & side of action have generous coverage of vine type foliate scroll engraving. L. D. Eberhart in his "The Deringer in America" states "About 20 examples of engraved Staffords have been recorded, from the same as the standard Henry rifle factory engraving." Silver finished bbl. w/ gold finished action. 2 Piece square butt white grips having acquired a mellow color w/ age & showing grain checks. Butt is marked w/ March 19, 1860 patent date. CONDITION: bbl. retains 40% silver finish showing a dark tarnish & blending w/ areas of pitting. Frame retains 80% gold finish. Grips show light wear. Action is loose at hinge. Dark pitted bore w/ worn rifling. (01-20682). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,600.
