PERCUSSION RIFLE BY J. FORDNEY OF LANCASTER, PA. Cal. 45 smooth bore. NSN. The 29 1/4" bbl. is octagonal at rear & transitions to rnd. through a wedding band. It is fitted w/ V notch rear & brass bead front sights. Top flat stamped "I. Fordney/LANCASTER Pa". Top left flat stamped w/ owner's name "D. PENNABECKEY"(?). Front spring trade percussion lock w/ some rudimentary engraving is unmarked. Stock of nicely figured tiger maple extends to within 3/8" of muzzle w/ brass cap & is brass mounted w/ chamfered sm. bow trigger guard w/ finger spur, matching crescent buttplate w/ 3 1/2" return, simple sideplate & single ramrod pipe & matching thimble. Stock is held to bbl. w/ 2 brass sidebolts without escutcheons. Stock is also decorated w/ brass tacks outlining buttplate & w/ 3 tack groups along bbl. channel. Grip is checkered & a classic sm. cheekpiece is on left side. CONDITION: fair to good. Iron parts cleaned to pewter highlights over considerable dark pitting. Maker's name strong on top. Owner's name partially struck. Brass once cleaned is nicely toned to mustard w/ brighter highlights. Stock w/ old oil refinish has sharp edges rounded, checkering almost obliterated. Rusted bore.
