Taino. PreColumbian. Unique bird like zoomorphic effigy (cemi). The initial shape is bird-like but the bulging eyes and broad wedge shaded bill appears reptilian. The wings are finely incised with symbolic icons. On reverse a large embossed figure is between the legs, possibly a characterize creature. Made of manatee bone. The manatee was the primary source of red meat. There bones are very dense and an excellent for carving. Length 4.0 inches. Taino Culture c.600-1500AD. Greater Antilles. Private collection.

BIDDING
Bidding advances shall be regulated by the auctioneer and shall be at his discretion. He or she has the right to refuse any bids. Some of the items offered at auction are subject to a reserve. A reserve is a minimum price agreed upon by the consignor of the property and the auction house. The auctioneer may bid on behalf of the consignor in order to reach the minimum sale amount. If the minimum amount is not reached, the auctioneer may pass the item. The auctioneer reserves the right to bid on behalf of clients and vendors, but shall not be liable for errors or omissions in executing instructions to bid. PAYMENT
