SK CUSTOMS® PRESENTS THE LOST STATE OF AMERICA – THE LOST STATE OF FRANKLIN – JOHN SEVIER

In 1784, the United States owed substantial debts to its allies from the Revolutionary War. Without the power to levy taxes, the Continental Congress, which was the body in charge before electing George Washington as our first President and before ratifying our Constitution, had to get creative in how they compensated the allies. The State of Franklin (today Northeast Tennessee), named after Benjamin Franklin was one of those.
On August 23, 1784, Led by John Sevier the State of Franklin declared its independence from North Carolina. Franklin represents the early American concept that “if your government is not representing you, then it’s your right and your duty to throw off that government and establish a new government,”

General John Sevier was a man of many, a pioneer, soldier, statesman and a founder of the Republic, was Tennessee’s first governor and one of its most recognized citizens. First and only governor of the lost State of Franklin, six-term governor and one of the founding fathers of Tennessee, congressman for four terms from the eastern district, he was a soldier having risen to the rank of General in the North Carolina militia.

By 1788 the State of Franklin had existed for over three years with no major conflicts with the North Carolina loyalists. Tensions, however, between the Franklinites and the North Carolina loyalists (also known as the Tiptonites) developed into The Battle of Franklin, ending its short lived significance and joining those four counties into today’s Tennessee.

We commemorate General John Sevier and the Franklinites by launching the second series in our Lost States of America Engravers Series. Limited to only 200 full-size government model Colt 1911 pistols chambered in .45ACP. Each pistol will be accompanied with a commemorative antique challenge coin. The grips are made out of genuine Oak Tennessee whiskey barrels.
