THOMAS GRISWOLD CONFEDERATE FOOT OFFICER SWORD.

Confederate copy of US model 1850 foot officer sword: “THOMAS, GRISWOLD & CO / NEW ORLEANS” stamped on ricasso. The scabbard that accompanies appears original from time of use w/ identical remnants of gold plate & patina to mounts. It also fits well & blade is in condition of being protected by scabbard since war. Thomas, Griswold & Co were in business only late 1861 & till fall of New Orleans in May 1862. Their products are among the highest quality in the South rivaling Northern counterparts like Ames & Roby. CONDITION: 29.75” blade retains much shine
& luster w/ staining & light areas of pitting. Marker’s mark is only partially struck. Grip is fine w/ full brown leather & tightly twisted copper wire. Brass hilt, pommel, scabbard mounts have matching mottled mustard patinas w/ traces of gold wash in protected areas. Middle scabbard mount has restored ring stud & drag appears to be added also but similar patina. Scabbard body is weathered, unsewn, heavily scuffed losing almost all its black polished finish, but sound. (02-17443/JS). $3,000-5,000.
