Lot of 2, both written by the same hand, both dated Jan 31, 1781 (no place). First note is 7.5 x 4.25 in., for receipt of a quarter cord and half-quarter cord of wood from William Bansman(?), QM, “for the use of four Continental Wagoners detained here,” signed by “Jacob Boyer.” Second note measures 7.5 x 3 in., for receipt of “half a cord of wood and two pounds of candles for Andrew Lee, Srgt. in Col. Hazen’s Regt for one Month,” singed by “George Moore.”

Andrew Lee was a Pennsylvanian who served in Col. Moses Hazen’s “2nd Canadian Regiment” (also known as “Congress’s Own” Regiment and Hazen’s Regiment) from Nov. 1776 to June 1783.

The date on both notes is nine days after Hazen’s Regiment assisted Lt. Col. William Hull’s forces in raiding a Loyalist position at Morrisania (in the current-day Bronx), capturing 52 prisoners and a large amount of ammunitions and supplies. Hazen’s Regiment was assigned by Hull to fend off a pursuing British force of 1,000 troops, ending in a skirmish in which Hazen’s men inflicted 35 British casualties.
