RIFLE MUSKET. Cal. 58. NSN. Bbl. 40" marked over breech "1864". Bbl. marked on top left side "VP eagle" Marked on bolster w/ eagle. 2 leaf folding rear sight. Stud type front sight. Beveled lockplate marked "U.S. SPINGFIELD eagle". "1864". Beveled hammer w/ replacement screw. Walnut stock marked on left panel over trigger w/ faint illegible inspector's cartouche. Left side of butt has large "H " (soldier's initial). 3 bands retained by springs. Upper & lower bands are solid. Tulip headed ramrod w/ swell. Ramrod does not seat fully in forend. Sling swivel bows are not present. Buttplate is marked "US". CONDITION: walnut stock has wear, staining & handling marks throughout. Notable gouges on left side of forend & ramrod channel by lower bands. Metal was bright turning overall gray & patina w/ light oxidation & scattered fine pitting. Notable sm. dents at wood line on right side of bbl. Bore has traces of worn rifling w/ dark oxidation & fine pitting throughout. (01-23761/RW). ANTIQUE. $400-600.
