U.S. M1830 NAVAL OFFICER'S SWORD.

Overall length: 34 1/2". Blade length: 28 1/8". Blade has a single wide fuller with a raised medial ridge towards the tip. It has gold highlighted etching on a blued field extending 14 1/2" up from the hilt. The etching includes stylized oak leaves and acorns, a circle of 13 five pointed stars and a large fouled anchor on both sides. Heavily gilded brass hilt featuring a single, fold down guard decorated with leaves and acorns. The crossguard has acorns as terminals with a leafed spray leading to the ferrule. The embellished knuckle bow leads into a heavy, superbly executed eagle's head with wonderfully articulated feathers on its head as well as down the entire length of the backstrap. The certifiably antique ivory grip is decoratively carved throughout. No scabbard. This is an exceptionally artistically rendered sword, likely the top of the line for any cutler. CONDITION: blade shows a mottled gray finish below the bluing. The gold highlighted etching is extremely strong and vibrant and the blued field presents an eye catching contrast. Gold plating throughout the hilt approaches 100%. The grip has a few minor chips just under the pommel. (02-17888/BF). $3,800-4,500.
