U.S. M1841 NAVAL OFFICER'S SWORD.

Overall length: 34". Blade length: 27 3/4". A fine quill back blade etched over 2/3 of its length with various nautical, foliate and patriotic motifs. A small etched panel near the ricasso reads, "N.P. Ames Cutler Springfield". Heavily gilded brass hilt featuring a double fold down guard with the front guard decorated with
leaves and acorns and the back guard being plain. The crossguard has acorns as terminals with a leafed spray leading to the ferrule. The lightly embellished and faceted knuckle bow leads into a beautifully styled eagle's head pommel with feathers leading part way down the faceted backstrap. The certifiably antique ivory grip is decoratively carved throughout. Scabbard is of the correct type and style but is not the original scabbard for this sword. The scabbard was produced by Horstmann and was likely used for a replacement when the original scabbard broke. Black leather scabbard has gilded brass mounts showing knotted ropes at the throat and middle mount with a dolphin at the drag. The throat has a scroll on the backside that reads, "HORSTMANN & SONS MAKERS PHILADA". CONDITION: blade shows a light gray overall patina. The etching remains quite clear throughout. Hilt retains nearly all of its original gilded finish. Grip shows some minor age cracks. Scabbard shows expected wear but remains exceptionally strong. Gilding on the mounts is 95+%. (02-17889/BF). $2,500-3,200.
