U.S. M1860 CAVALRY OFFICER'S SABER WITH

PRESENTATION TO LIEUTENANT WILLIAM. L. GREGG OF THE 3RD PENNSYLVANIA CAVALRY. Overall length: 39 1/2". Blade length: 31 3/4". Blade has a single wide fuller with a 15 1/4" narrow fuller near the spine. Blade is etched over half its length with various military & foliate motifs that include 4 separate stands of arms. An etched area near the ricasso reads, "W.H.Horstmann & Sons Philadelphia.". The ricasso is stamped with a king's head indicating forging of the blade by Weyersburg. Gilded brass hilt with acanthus leaves on the top and bottom of the 2 branches of the guard. The pommel is also embellished with acanthus leaves. Wire wrapped sharkskin grip. Iron scabbard with an oval silver plate between the scabbard rings. The silver plate is engraved, "Presented to Wm.L. Gregg 1st Lieut. "G" Co. 3rd Cavalry Pa. by the Officers and members of the Company January 1862.". 1st Lieutenant William L. Gregg enlisted in the 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry on August 8, 1861. He resigned his commission on January 9, 1862. Presumably, he received this saber on that date. CONDITION: blade has much of the original luster from the factory polish. Etching is clear & crisp with some spotty discoloration near the ricasso. Hilt retains areas of original gilded finish. Grip shows wear but is complete and undamaged except for some shrinking to the sharkskin. Scabbard has several shallow dents throughout but no major problems. Engraving on presentation plate is easily legible. (02-17651/BF). $2,000-3,000.
