CORONA MODEL 1903-A3 BOLT ACTION RIFLE RECEIVER AND REMINGTON MARKED HEAVY BARREL. Cal. 30-06. S# 4727807. Four grooved 24-1/8" bbl. marked on lower left side “REMINGTON ARMS CO. INC. ILION N.Y. MADE IN USA” “346” & “859330?”. Marked on right side in electro pencil “RIFLE ACCURACY CAL 30” “?” & “7692088”. No sights are fitted. Receiver bridge has standard inverted dovetail rear sight mount. These accuracy test devices were named for famed ballistics experimenter Dr. Franklin W. Mann & used his system of a massive bbl. fitted w/ concentric rings to slide in a “V” rest in order to test the accuracy of ammunition. These bbls. & devices were used in both Army ordnance & civilian ammunition plants including Frankford & Springfield Arsenals & Winchester Repeating Arms dealing w/ government contract ammunition production. Information on these unique devices may be found in “The Springfield 1903 Rifles” by Brophy. Receiver is marked “U.S. SMITH-CORONA” & “MODEL 03-A3”. Rifle is fitted w/ Remington marked bolt & bolt sleeve. Bolt is electro pencil numbered to match. Unmarked mag. cutoff. Lg. bow Remington type stamped trigger guard. Bbl. made w/ cylindrical portion ahead of receiver ring measuring 2-1/4" long & 1-1/2" in dia. followed by 1/2" ring approx. 1-5/8" dia. Balance of bbl. measures 20-5/8" long & 1-1/4" in dia. Rifle fitted w/ the middle section of a walnut stock marked on left side “RA” “crossed cannons” & “FJA”. Stock section is approx. 12-1/2" overall extending rearward from receiver ring to the stock nose area. 2 recoil bolts. Stock has little or no finish. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: matching protective wrapping labeled “Rifle Cal 30 Accuracy” & “NFSN” dated “6-72”. Wrapping is in fair condition. CONDITION: abbreviated stock has light wear & staining. Markings are faint. Metal has lg. degree of original Parkerized finish w/ wear & staining plus tiny scattered areas of white paint. Muzzle appears to have been recrowned. Near excellent shiny bore.
