U.S. MODEL 1882 SPRINGFIELD CHAFFEE-REESE BOLT

ACTION MAGAZINE RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# NSN. Bbl. 27-7/8". Springfield 1877 type rear sight graduated to 1,400 yards & marked on left forward end “C-R”. Stud type front sight w/ pinned blade. 753 of these bolt action repeating rifles feeding through a tubular magazine in the buttstock were mfg. for trials; however the rifle was not found acceptable for general service. Receiver is marked on top of left rail “U.S.-SPRINGFIELD.-1884.” Bbl. is marked on top left w/ “VP” & “eagle” acceptance mark plus marked over chamber w/ tiny “R”. 2 band rifle has iron furniture. Mag. cutoff selector on right front of receiver. The mag. tube & feed mechanism is not present. Swivel bow is not present at front of trigger guard. Upper band carries swivel bow & stacking swivel. Light trap door type ramrod. Walnut stock marked on left rear of buttstock w/ boxed “SWP” “1884” & marked behind trigger guard w/ circle script “P”. Buttplate is unmarked & is equipped w/ loading gate for the tubular mag. CONDITION: stock has original finish w/ moderate wear & scattered handling marks throughout leaving crisp markings. Metal retains 50% original blue finish turning patina w/ wear & very light spots of oxidation. Bore is turning slightly dark w/ scattered very light pitting but strong sharp lands.(01-21394/RW).
