U.S. Marked Colt Model 1851 Navy Late Third Model Single Action Percussion Revolver, #73808, .36 cal., 7.5" octagon barrel with brass pin front and fixed rear sights, blue and case hardened finish with brass grips straps, smooth one-piece walnut grips, small brass trigger guard. Mfg'd 1857. Revolver is in fine overall condition retaining 15%-20% original toning blue finish drifting to gray patina. Barrel shows sharp edges with original finish under the loading lever and in protected areas. Left side of muzzle shows holster wear smoothing the sharp edges. The New York barrel address is crisp. Loading lever and frame show considerable original case coloring, with the loading lever assembly being the sharpest. Frame retains considerable original muted smoky case color. Left side of frame has a sharp "COLTS PATENT U.S." martial marking with military acceptance marks. Screw heads are very good and all visible serial numbers are matching, including the arbor and wedge. Wedge shows significant original finish. Cylinder retains approx. 25%-30% original toning blue drifting to patina, with 85%-90% of the naval scene retained and a legible engagement date. All six of the safety pins are intact and the nipples are good. Hammer shows light surface erosion and oxidation due to powder exposure and use, with some knackering around the wedge from rough disassembly. Brass grips straps and large trigger guard all show a pleasing patina. Walnut grips are very good with a crisp "ADK" (Andrew D. King) cartouche on the left grip and a faint outline of a cartouche still visible on the right. Grips are better than average walnut with some burl figure and have the matching pen and ink serial number in the grip channel. Action is crisp and the timing is very good; bore is good with some roughness and well-defined rifling. This is a most acceptable martially marked Navy retaining considerable original finish while displaying marks consistent with carry and use. Est.: $4,000-$6,000. (Antique)
