U.S. Model 1832 Artillery Short Sword, by Ames, blade dated 1852, with ''U.S.'' and faint inspector's marks ''A.D.K.''. Blade length is 19-1/8'' with one long central rectangular fuller and two smaller fullers side by side on both sides of the blade; the other side of the blade at the ricasso is marked ''Ames Mfg. Co., Chicopee''. Brass handle is retained with three round steel rivets and the blade tang is peened at the top. Crossguard is marked with inspector's marks ''A.D.K.'' and ''RHKW''. Leather scabbard is very sound with brass fittings at top and bottom but may be a newer made replacement. Condition is very good, with the blade having a dark gray patina, and covered in old sticky black grease (may clean up to better condition). Handle has an even toned patina that was probably cleaned at some time in the past. Scabbard shows crazing to the leather and a darker patina to the brass fittings. Est.: $500-$700.
