U.S. Model 1836 Martial Pistol, by Robert Johnson, Altered to Percussion, NVSN, .54 cal., 8.5" round barrel marked "US/P" at breech, has brass blade front and dished-oval rear sights; beveled lockplate with rounded rear is crisply marked "U.S./R. Johnson/Middn Conn/1844" under brass pan filler; steel furniture includes loop trigger guard with rear tang extending to round buttcap whose backstrap extends to barrel tang, serpentine sideplate made integral with the single barrel band, captive swivel ramrod with button tip; 3/4-length stock of oil-finished walnut is marked "T 17" behind hammer, has "JH" (James Harris) and "WAT" (William A. Thornton) inspectors' marks at left, raised panels at either side of lock. Mfg'd ca. 1836-44. Condition is very good retaining no original finishes but smooth gunmetal gray with cleaned scattered light discoloration. Stock is sound and smooth showing minimal marks, hairline cracks at tang and top sideplate screw, discernable inspectors' cartouches, lovely grain, color and finish. Action is strong and crisp, smoothbore is clean showing a patch or two of light oxidation. The standard handgun of the US-Mexican War, many M1836s saw new life during the Civil War after their alteration to percussion. Est.: $600-$900. (Antique)
