U.S. Model 1860 Enlisted Cavalry Saber, by Ames. The 34.5'' blade has one narrow and one large fuller, marked at ricasso ''Made by Ames Mfg. Co., Chicopee Mass.'', with ''U.S.'' and ''G.K.C.'' inspector's marks, dated 1864. The three-branch brass guard is in nice condition, pommel has inspector's stamp ''H.K.'' at the top. Grip has most all of its original leather covering and single twisted copper wire wrapping. Scabbard has a dark rust patina overall and it is hard to see any inspector's stamps. Condition is very good, the blade showing age graying, rust stains and spots, but no sharpening, pitting or edge nicks. The original leather blade washer is present. Brass guard and pommel have a lovely dark uncleaned patina to the brass with a nice orange mottled appearance that only comes from age. Leather on the grip shows wear, cracking and flaking, but overall is sound. Grip wire is nice and tight with a dark copper patina. Scabbard shows several dings in the lower third of the body, with a dark rusty patina overall. There is rust pitting in some spots, more heavily at the drag area. Both hanger rings are present. Blade fits well in the scabbard. Overall length is 42.5''. A good example of an untouched Civil War era cavalry saber. Est.: $600-$800. (Doug Beneck collection)
