U.S. Model 1872 Cavalry Officer's Sword, no scabbard. The 33-1/4'' bright nickel-plated blade is nicely decorated with etched engraved floral designs, American eagle and shield, U.S., and military motifs. It is maker marked near the ricasso by ''Springfield Armory, Springfield, Mass. U.S.A.''. It has one narrow and one wide fuller and is double edged about 12'' toward the tip. The original leather blade washer is present. The three-branch guard and pommel are cast in high relief with vines and floral decorations, large American eagle, stars, and a shield on side of pommel. There are lightly scratched letters in the side bow of the knuckle guard that read ''K. BATT. 1st U.S.'', and on the other side ''Gettysburg-Wilderness''. The owner may have been a Civil War veteran. The grooved wood grip is covered in dark sharkskin and wrapped with a single twisted brass wire. OAL is 39''. Condition is very good with the blade nice and bright with silver frosting inside the etched engraved panels. There are some scuffs and scratches, with a couple of spots of light rust, and a few minor edge nicks. Guard and pommel retain a lot of the original gold fire gilt finish. Sharkskin on the grip shows some wear and lightening to the color, with all the wire wrapping intact and tight. Handle is nice and tight to the blade. Est.: $250-$450.
