U.S. SPRINGFIELD LATE STYLE CADET CONVERSION MODEL
1884 SINGLE SHOT TRAPDOOR MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 295338. Bbl. 29 5/8". Buffington rear sight graduated to 1400 yards marked "R". Blade front sight w/ added unmarked "M 1883" Buffington sight cover. Receiver mfg. in 1885. This late style Cadet showing arsenal quality workmanship was made by shortening a service rifle stock w/ the buttplate width reduced & the stock tip fitted w/ a walnut filler used when the ramrod stop was remounted. This model of Cadet rifle may be correct w/ the sling swivels present. Bbl. marked on top left rear w/ "VP" eagle proof & "A" over chamber. "1884" Dated breech block. Flat lockplate marked "US SPRINGFIELD" & eagle. Bottom of stock & receiver trough have approx. 1/4" hole drilled through & the hole is ground w/ a chamfer in the trough. This may have been done for a lamp cord to convert the rifle to a floor lamp. The firing pin has been shortened & the extractor while present does not function correctly. Upper band has stacking & sling swivels. Shortened ramrod is present. Short comb walnut stock is marked with "C 19" ahead of buttplate. CONDITION: stock has arsenal rework refinish w/ moderate wear & handling marks throughout. Wrist area over trigger guard has brass pinned reinforcements on both sides. Metal turning overall gray & patina w/ wear & light oxidation. Ramrod stop is broken but both pieces are present. Bore is shiny w/ sharp lands but scattered sm. spots of oxidation & fine pitting throughout. (01-23830/RW). ANTIQUE. $300-500.
