U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1871 ROLLING BLOCK SINGLE
SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 50/70. S# NSN. Bbl. 36" w/ ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards. Stud type front sight modified to blade type profile. 10,001 of these rifles were produced at Springfield Armory during the years 1871-1872. The rolling Block action of this rifle is the "locking action" which sets the hammer at half cock when the breech block is rotated forward. The hammer spur and breech block thumbpiece is notably heavier construction on these rifles. The right side of the receiver is marked w/ the "eagle" "U.S. SPRINGFIELD 1872". Left side of the receiver is marked "MODEL 1871". Tang markings include "REMINGTON'S PATENT" & patent dates. 2 piece walnut stock set. Ramrod is present. Bbl. is secured by 2 bands retained w/ springs. Buttstock has indistinct oval cartouche on the left side in cheek area. Marked on right side of grip w/ illegible boxed inspector's mark. Marked on top ahead of buttplate tang "D55". Marked on buttplate "25". CONDITION: stock set has arsenal rework type finish w/ loss of wood in inletted areas; notable around grip area & has moderate wear, staining & handling marks throughout. 1" crack behind top tang & 1 1/2" crack behind bottom tang. Notable chipping around ramrod channel & stock line. Metal has turned overall gray w/ moderate wear & handling marks. Front sight has been modified. Bore has strong lands & is shiny but w/ fine pitting throughout. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (01-22491/RW). ANTIQUE. $700-900.
