RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 308261. Bbl. 32 1/2" w/ "VP" & eagle head proofs on top left & "A" on top over chamber. Buffington ladder rear sight marked "R" in the upper right corner graduated to 2,000 yds. Blade type front sight. Low arch breech block marked "US MODEL 1884" equipped w/ aluminum bronze firing pin. Flush lockplate w/ eagle & "U.S. SPRINGFIELD". Correct ramrod is present. Upper band carries sling & stacking swivels. Two piece trigger guard. Walnut stock marked w/ very faint boxed "SWP". Date is not legible. "US" marked buttplate. Stock is marked ahead of buttplate tang w/ "19" in white. CONDITION: stock has moderate wear, staining & handling marks w/ sm. missing chips at end of trigger guard & notable missing chip at ramrod channel by lower band. Metal retains traces of original blue, turning gray & patina w/ light oxidation & scattered fine pitting notable on trigger guard & buttplate. Area around front sight has notable wear & scratches which maybe from use of sight hood. Good shiny bore but w/ appearance of metal fouling. PROVANANCE: from the estate collection of Thomas J.
