U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1888 RAMROD BAYONET SINGLE
SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 517805. Bbl. 32 1/2" w/ Buffington rear sight graduated to 2000 yds. Marked in top right corner "R". Blade front sight w/ original sheet metal sight protector. Bbl. marked on top left rear w/ eagle "VP" proof. 35 1/2" ramrod bayonet threaded at rear. Upper band carries stacking & sling swivels. Breech block marked "US MODEL 1884" w/ low arch. Flat lockplate marked w/ "US SPRINGFIELD" & eagle. One piece trigger guard. Long comb walnut stock marked on left side over trigger guard w/ partial boxed inspector's mark which appears to be from Samuel W. Porter. Buttstock has faint encircled "P" proof behind trigger guard tang & buttstock marked on right side w/ lg. stamped "12" enhanced w/ white. "US" marked buttplate w/ trap. CONDITION: stock has well worn original finish w/ staining, dents & scratches throughout. Notable chipping at forend by upper band. Upper band spring does not hold tightly against band. Metal has turned overall gray & patina w/ wear, light pitting & scattered spots of oxidation throughout. Bbl. & bayonet mt. have notable sm. dents likely from freeing bayonet latch. Bore has a degree of shine & sharp lands but grooves are turning dark w/ areas of very light pitting. PROVANANCE: from the estate collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (01-23368/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-800.
