U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1888 RAMROD BAYONET SINGLE
SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 514068. Bbl. 32 5/8". Buffington ladder rear sight graduated to 1400 yds. & marked on upper right corner of ladder "R". Blade front sight. These rifles were the first to be equipped w/ a ramrod bayonet which may be used as a cleaning rod. Low arch breech block marked "US MODEL 1884" . Flush lockplate marked w/ eagle "US SPRINGFIELD". 3 click tumbler. One piece trigger guard. Correct 35 1/2" ramrod bayonet is present. Walnut stock marked w/ encircled script "P" proof under grip plus 3 Ls on right side of buttstock. Trap buttplate. CONDITION: stock has extensive wear, dents, scratches & staining throughout from heavy use & hard service. Notable cracks behind lockplate & left side of forend. Ramrod channel has lg. missing chips on both sides. Metal has turned overall dark patina w/ wear, oxidation & fine pitting. Windage adjustment does not move. Bore has sharp lands but turning dark in grooves & scattered fine pitting throughout. PROVANANCE: from the estate collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (01-23359/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-700.
